September Home Maintenance Checklist
September Home Maintenance Checklist: Get Your Virginia Home Fall-Ready
Ok RVA, Can you believe it’s already September? Before you know it, pumpkin spice will be in everything, and you’ll be swapping out your tanks for oversized sweaters. Before you get too cozy, there are a few things you’ll want to check off your home maintenance list. September is the perfect time to prep your home for the cooler months ahead, so let’s dive into this month’s must-dos.
1. Winterize Your Sprinkler System
I know, I know—winter feels ages away, but trust me, you don’t want to forget this one. Draining your sprinkler system now will save you from a frozen, busted mess when temperatures drop. Not sure how to do it? This is one of those times where calling in a pro might be worth it—better safe than sorry, right?
2. Give Your Grill Some TLC
After a summer of backyard BBQs, your grill could use a little love. A good scrub will take care of that grease buildup, and a quick inspection can catch any issues before they become big problems. You don’t want to find out your grill has bit the dust next spring when you’re itching for that first burger of the season.
3. Check Weather Stripping Around Doors
There’s nothing worse than a drafty door when it’s freezing outside—and nothing better than lower heating bills! Take a few minutes to check the weather stripping around your doors. If it’s looking a little worse for wear, swap it out. Your wallet (and toes) will thank you when winter rolls in.
4. Clean and Store Garden Hoses
We’ve all been there—left a garden hose out too long and ended up with a cracked, useless mess. Save yourself the hassle by draining and coiling your hoses now. Store them away from the cold, and you’ll be all set when spring rolls around again.
5. Protect Your Wood Surfaces
Virginia weather can be brutal on your deck, fence, or any other outdoor wood surface. Before the fall rain hits, give them a coat of weather sealant. This quick task will keep them looking great and standing strong, no matter what Mother Nature throws at them.
General Homeowner Reminders
And while you're knocking out your September to-dos, don’t forget these general tips:
-
Set Up an Annual Wood-Destroying Insect Inspection
Don’t let termites or other pests munch on your biggest investment. An annual inspection can catch any infestations early, saving you from some serious headaches (and repair bills). If you are in the Greater Richmond area and want a great locally owned pest company, check out Local Termite & Moisture Control. Make sure you tell him I sent you, Phillip will take great care of you! -
Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors Monthly
These little devices can be lifesavers—literally. Make sure they’re in tip-top shape by testing them regularly. It only takes a minute, and it’s totally worth the peace of mind. -
Inspect Your Roof Annually
A quick once-over can save you from a leaky mess down the road. Look for missing shingles, cracks, or anything else that seems off. A little attention now can save you a lot of money later.
Getting your home ready for fall doesn’t have to be a chore. Knock these tasks out early, and you’ll be able to sit back, relax, and enjoy everything that autumn in Central Virginia has to offer. Stay tuned for next month’s checklist—you won’t want to miss it!
Stay Cozy Yall!
